Im in the Valley Division (About 10 miles or less from the academy) and I was wondering if anyone could tell me how to go about going on a ride along in my area?
If you are in the application process, contact your Division recruiter or a shift sergeant at the local office. If you are not in the application process, good luck. You may want to search, as this has been discussed before -- we generally do not grant ride alongs to the general public.

How about ride alongs for a serving traffic management member from Victoria police in Melbourne, Australia.
Can you point me in the right direction as I am in the USA in April/May 2006.

Being here in April/May 2006 is going to be a neat trick Slattery! If you come here in current time however and just present your credentials as an Aussie LE Officer, I think most any area office supervisor will let you ride along.

Easy trick, actually. When you fly from Australia to the USA, you arrive before you left. I got to LAX before I left Melbourne!
If all goes well, I'll still be on break-in at that time. Otherwise, I'd love to help you...need someone to bring me up to speed on the latest Kath & Kim adventures!
My office will let anyone ride (over 18 and no felony convictions). Just show up, ask a Sgt. The rules: dress appropriately and don't get hurt.

I know a guy who who's a Lt. at the Oroville CHP office who said I could go for a ridealong when I turn 18.(less than a month to go!) I'm not sure about the details though.
I have long hair, will that be a problem with the ride along? As you can tell. I'm an ultra newb. :P

Well if it were me I'd dress in business casual and be cleanly groomed. Listen to all instructions, don't talk over the radio and ask questions so that you learn. If you want a career with the CHP, then long hair and facial hair is pretty much out. I keep my hair cut short personally and have for many years. I'd love to get a ride along right now as I have to wait for my vision stability stuff to get dialed in before I can apply. But I'm not sure if any of the area offices here in the Sac Valley will grant a ride alongs to those not yet in the process.

Sometimes you just have to call around and find out each office's policy pertaining to ride alongs. I live in the bay area and called a few local offices and they all denied me. They wanted me to have passed my written test prior to scheduling a ride along. And I understand because I'm sure there is a large amount of requests and they dont want to be giving ride alongs to those not serious.
But I looked into a few offices on the border of the bay area and there are a few offices that will do it. So my advice to you is get a list of the closest 20 offices and start calling. Good luck.
