you can call, but i wouldn't recommend it. if you are in backgrounds, and haven't been contacted yet for your next step, or next meeting, its because they aren't ready to talk to you. the BI's are extremely busy, and handle a ridiculous case load. everytime they have to stop to review the status of your file, and get back to you, it only slows things down more. keep in mind that they will not forget about you. you are a file on the desk that they cannot just throw to the side without following through on. as soon as they have information for you, you will get a call.
i'm not a BI, but i understand that they don't look to highly on calls just for the sake of calling. they'll get to you.
just my 2 cents. xmait can probably answer this better though... i think he did BI's back in the day.

i don't necessarily agree with this. i wouldn't categorically recommend calling, but i think it's warranted in some cases. my husband's bi was... lacking in communication skills, haha? on the advice of a close family friend who used to be a bi guy, my husband did call his bi. good thing he did, too... his bi readily admitted to not doing a thing on his file and in fact DID set it aside, saying, "well, you're still in the military, so i didn't think there was any hurry." it caused problems with my husband's military separation and got him bumped to a later academy class... almost had to delay THAT class, too.
obviously this is only his experience and i don't think it's the norm, but there certainly are times that a follow-up call is warranted.

i think dw is probably the go-to guy here... ;)

There is nothing wrong with contacting your BI, and if it has been a while since you have heard from him/her I would recomend doing so. I had a huge mess with my application because I took my QAP in Sacramento, but was living in SoCal, so all of my info has to be transferred down here for the BI to look at. Well, apparently my BI had tried to contact me in November of 05 but I hadnt hear anything. So in February of 02 I decided to call Sac and they transferred me to my BI down here who informaed me that he had tried to contact m 4 months earlier  . But after that point eveything moved smoothly. Contacting SPB wont do you any good because they will not know your status as an applicant until it comes to the psych exam, at which point they will not tell you any information over the phone. I called SPB regarding my psych interview and they said that they had made a decision on my interview but that it was up to the CHP to let me know what the result was.
If you are in backgrounds right now, and you havent heard from your BI in a while you can always givem them a call just to check up. They know that you are excited and anxious about your hiring, but they dont want you calling them every week with an update. What part of the process are you currently in, that way the people who have alreday been through that part can give you some advice.

okay fine... so much for my two cents!! i guess i'll rephrase. i wouldn't call just for the sake of finding out where things are, if its only been a month or two. if you know your friends have gotten letters, and your past employers are getting calls, then you know everything is moving. if it's been awhile, and there has been no apparent movement, then i guess calling would be a good thing.
just my personal experience... i waited a couple of months, then got a call from my BI saying they were extremely busy, and that i shouldn't contact them, as they would call me when they were ready to begin (which was another 4 months after that call). however, i know that all cases are different.
As I have said before, I wouldn't personally suggest calling for the sake of calling. If you haven't heard anything for three or more months or have other circumstances, then give your local recruiter a call, but otherwise just be patient. It is very, very rare for someone to "get lost" in the system.

Postings that are refering to waiting months to hear from a BI are almost a thing of the past at this point. The Background Units are in "high gear" trying to get as many people through as they can. That doesn't mean they are going to let you slide through if you have "issues", it just means they are currently working their tails off to get as many people ready for the upcoming academy classes as they can. Eveyone who has been through the process understands how anxious a new applicant can be. If you have taken the written and PAT/QAP try calling the recruiter you have been speaking with. He/she is usually in contact with the BI's on a daily/weekly basis. They are always willing to help out in any way they can. If you have been contacted by a BI, do "exactly" what they have asked you to do (especially getting your paper work in on time. But be absolutely sure it is thorough and accurate.) Not having all the required paper work and information can often delay your background, which may cause your BI to start working on another case while they are waiting for you. Good luck.

Thanks peckerHead,
I had my final psych interview on 7/12 and I am waiting for my final letter. I did call SPB last week to see what happen to my Psych, and they just told me that they are still working on it and they said that they will fax the result to chp soon... So I am waiting... and wondering if I should call spb again or not...
I hate this waiting game.:
