Hello all,

I know I have already posted a couple times already but I thought I should introduce myself.

I'm 20.5 years young pursuing my dream to become a California Highway Patrol Officer. I was a Sheriff Explorer at my local SO for 3 years and dedicated myself to 100 full 12 hour shift ride alongs. About 80% of my ride alongs were in our traffic division and that is what sort of molded my path to the CHP. All I can say is I love patrol and I love the traffic enforcement aspect along with the other duties as well. I have done everything from CHP 180's, traffic collision investigation, DUI enforcement stops/checkpoints, filled out arrest paperwork, citations both moving and parking, weighed trailers with commercial vehicle enforcement and many more.

I am currently taking courses at my local JC in report writing and I'm also taking a class called PC 832. I am an Eagle Scout from the Boy Scouts of America as well. I have made my fair share of mistakes and I have regretted my decisions but just as importantly I have learned from my mistakes and haven't made them again.

My decision to join the CHP happened when I did my first ever ride along with CHP Baldwin Park area office. I had a blast with the all the officers and the watch commander. I knew after that ride along I was going to apply for the CHP and I wouldn't give up til I was following the footsteps of many other brave men and women before me who wore the badge few are fortunate to wear. Unfortunately for the PIO of the Baldwin Park office, she also knows I'm dedicated to becoming a CHP officer. Haha Bless her soul! The Baldwin Park office Officers have given me much motivation and great words of advice along with this forum. Any advice is appreciated from any Member of the CHP.

I look forward to applying with the department when the time comes and I know patience is a virtue. In the meantime I will be busy preparing and keeping myself out of trouble. Thank you to all the officers of the CHP and to the border officers serving my area with integrity and service above self.

Sincerely, Damon (Future Border division applicant)

Welcome and good luck to you. It sounds like you have your priorities straight and a good perspective on your future. 28 years into my career, I can say without reservation that I have no regrets and if given the chance to do it all over again, I wouldn't change a thing. Hang in there and be patient - it's worth it.

Just hang in there. When I came out of the Army I had to sit through a two year hiring freeze before I joined. I just worked and went back to school until they started testing again. Just like Mac, I would not change a thing.

Good Luck

I washed out of CTC III-08 due to a pre-existing (pre-academy) injury (knee tendonitis/shin splints), I'm waiting to re-apply/re-instate/re-tread.

Took me 2 years to get healthy, then by the time I was "healthy" CHP had stopped taking applications :hitwall:

In the meantime... I applied with Border Patrol last fall, and am in backgrounds with them currently... Gotta do something ya know.

Any reason or restriction on future re-treads doing ride-alongs?
(I know it kinda defeats the purpose, as someone who has already been to the academy already knows (or should) what the job they're signing up for entails

Aww man that's a bummer, I already told myself I will battle through any injury or sickness once in the CHP academy because I am not waiting another year!

I too am in backgrounds with another agency but as always CHP is my first choice. Its just unpredictable when they open up again thanks to Gov. J.B.

Best of luck to everyone

Don't settle, if CHP is truly your first choice.

Thank you I needed to read that, I'm just going to keep on waiting but try and get a civilan position in the meantime. 23112 and Mac thank you for your support hoping this thing ends.
