Are officers required to have any other classification than "C"? If not, what happens if they need to drive a bus full of kids down a steep hill like Ponch had to that one time? ;)

In all seriousness, I am kind of curious about it.

That is funny because I was too just pondering that same question a few days back.

My husband just has a "C" class plus his motorcycle license, but he had that long before the academy..That's a really good question and something I never thought about!

There is no special class or endorsement required, although there are usually a couple guys in an office with a class A or B.

Do you need to learn how to drive a stick shift before joining up the CHP or any P.Ds?

Good info. Regarding the stick shift question, I've always though that kids should learn and test on a stick.

Nope... At least not right now, as our vehicles are all autos.

Just for those of you who are on the edge of your seats, Ponch safely stopped the bus full of kids by having that blonde haired female officer pace in front of him as he used car as a brake. Oh yeah, the bus was a stick shift, too!

Class "C" is all that's required as an officer. I'm sure there are officers who don't know how to drive sticks, although I've never asked around to see. When we had the Mustangs you had to do a "check ride" with a sergeant before you were allowed to drive them on patrol, and if you didn't know how to drive a stick, you didn't get to drive 'em.

If I were thinking about applying I would make sure I could at the very least take off in first gear in a manual transmission in the event I was called upon to move a vehicle out of the middle of a freeway to the shoulder....or is that why God invented the push bar

I was chatting with a former-LAPD officer and he told me everyone has to learn the operation of a stick-shift vehicle before or prior to becoming a police officer...

That may be so for that agency, but they're all different. City, county and state governments all have different requirements, and as DW said, all vehicles currently being used by the CHP are automatic, so it's not mandatory to know how. It would come in handy, though, trying to manuever vehicles cleaning up a TC...My husband's vehicles have all been manuals, with the exception of our new Ridgeline, and it's come in handy during his short career with the CHP..

I would like to become an MRE once I get on and a few years behind me. I have my Class A and hope it will look good when that time comes.

I also think everyone should at least be able to get in a stick shift and be able to get it moving, because you never know when it may come in handy.

The Camaros in field areas are auto -- only the Academy had manuals (and I believe the new ones are auto?).

Ive never heard of a Dept that "required" you to know how to drive a stick. It wouldnt be a bad idea though....Ive had to move a few off the road. Youd look kinda silly hopping that thing to the shoulder. And God help you if you tear up someones car trying to move it and then actually admit you didnt know how to drive a stick.

How long ago did he work with the LAPD? I've talked to my friend who is currently an officer and he says this isn't the case today.

He was a LAPD officer for 10+ years and left them due to injures. He's currently an officer for a Texas department.

Let me rephrase that -- some of the instructor vehicles have manual transmissions. Nothing a Cadet will go near is a manual.

Don't worry, the closest you'll get to those Camaros at the Academy are when you run by them in the morning during PT.

Demonstration and PR. You may have seen the link to the "EVOC Demonstration" -- there are a few copies floating around the Internet.
