I'm not sure if anybody ever posted this topic here, but here goes.

These are the cop shows I used to watch over the years:

Hill Street Blues
CHiPs
Cagney and Lacey
Miami Vice
Barney Miller
SWAT
Cops
Currently I am really enjoying Monk. We own seasons 1-4.

I don't think the A-Team, Magnum PI, the Fall Guy, etc. qualify as cop shows.

I could never really get into 21 Jump Street, Law and Order, CSI, etc.

What are your favorite cop shows?

 I'm sorry, did you say 21 Jump Street???

According to my wife, I am Monk. I've watched it a couple of times, but can't for the life of me figure out what she means by that... It's driving me crazy.

OK, maybe Reno 911 can't really qualify as a "cop show," but I absolutely LOVE IT!! As far as "serious" cop shows, I really like the Law and Order series... All 23 different versions. I could never get into CSI at all. Perry Mason is a who-dunnit rather than a cop show, along with Columbo, but both of those are great, too.

CHiPs, just because it was so corny. :D Adam-12 because it was a classic.

I don't watch cop shows - I get plenty enough of it at work. My wife loves CSI, but it's hard for me to suspend disbelief long enough to watch it with her.....and I *really* get tired of the tv-brainwashed sheeple who think that the stuff they do on CSI is real, and that we can use it in "real life" to solve their cases!

Not the germ thing, but the OCD thing. I mean, c'mon - am I the only one who goes to great lengths to make sure the labels in the pantry are all aligned and facing outward? You know I can actually look out my office door and stare at the back of engine 51 about three feet away (really, I'm not kidding it's actually an in service engine). The Los Angeles County Fire Department re-numbered station 60 located on the Universal lot to station 51 a few years ago. The station houses an Engine and a Squad. The tram ride people can take rolls right by the station and the tourists get a kick out of seeing the number 51 on the rigs.

Anyone remember this classic line from the first Adam-12 in 1968 when Pete Maloy asks his rookie partner on his first day "do you know what this is" as he points to the black and white and Reed responds with "sure,it's a police car" Pete then comes off with this in his best Jack Webb voice.....

Pete Malloy: This black and white patrol car has an overhead valve V8 engine. It develops 325 horsepower at 4800 RPM's. It accelerates from 0 to 60 in seven seconds; it has a top speed of 120 miles an hour. It's equipped with a multi channeled DFE radio and an electronic siren capable of admitting three variables, wale, yelp, and alert. It also serves as an outside radio speaker and public address system. The automobile has two shotgun racks, one attached to the bottom portion of the front seat, one in the vehicle trunk. Attached to the middle of the dash, illuminated by a single bulb is a hot sheet desk. Fastened to which you will always make sure is the latest one off the teletype before you ever roll. You take care of it and it will take care of you.

Reed is speechless and then asks..."you want me to drive?"

This wasn't a cop show exactly, but I think my first introduction to television shows involving emergency personnel was a show called Rescue 8. Came on in the early 60's if I remember. Barney Miller was a good comedy with every so often a bit of real drama to remind you it was founded in reality. Some of characterizations must have been derived from someones experiences.
Sorry about that Cop Rock crack, but I was really embarrassed for law enforcement over that one. That show did more to lessen the authorative recognition of the badge than a thousand pictures of sleeping security gaurds. The portrayal of uniformed officers of the law breaking out in song and dance in between handcuffing suspects and responding to shooting calls just didn't advance the propriety of the office. I always envisioned some poor officer stepping up to the witness stand to give testimony on a DUI case and the defense attorney saying "Before we get started officer, how about doing a little number for the court".

Now that's a golden oldie that I bet not many folks remember! Rescue 8 was the granddaddy of shows like Emergency and was a very well done portrayal of LAFD rescue squads of the day ('59-'61 I think). I've never seen it in reruns so I hope it gets released on DVD someday.

Something prodded the old memory banks this morning,

Two shows I used to watch, both of them not exactly cop shows, but pretty close for their time.
#1) Sky King. For its' time, it was as close to a cop show as the TV had in those days. Someone was always getting arrested in the end, and the theme was pretty much centered around an investigation into some probable wrongdoing.

#2) Have Gun/Will Travel
I know the character was more bounty hunter than sheriff, but he still followed the law 'n order principles of the old west. Boones character, Paladin, used some extra-legal methods to take in his suspects for sure; but never-the-less.......

It was pretty good- don't quite know what to make of the rookie character yet. The falling-into-the-golden-boy-trap thing where he had the one good shoot, then suddenly decided to run into an active 211 by himself- I dunno if anyone would be that stupid.

Only noticed the rapid-healing shooting victim in uniform. Figured it was no more than a costume, since he's theoretically out at 50% untaxed. Of course, then I thought I saw that same character on duty in the preview for next week's... hmm.

The detective characters are leaving an odd taste as well, and it looks like it's going to go the "all cops have crappy marriages" route. It's all good eye candy, though- just a way to rest my brain and put the 3-year-old to sleep.:doubt:

I'm still hanging in there waiting to find some attachment to the characters. I think next week is already the season finale. It seems to me that they are trying to cover too much ground with too many scenarios, and it is just not nearly as gripping as Shield was. Sort of just touching on each event slightly and not in enough depth to leave the viewer that interested. I will continue to hang on for better writing. Looks like the next one is pretty wild.

What the show needs is more consistency with the characters. A cop gets shot in one episode and the following week he's back on the job. I have watched every episode so I don't know how I missed the FTO having a drug issue in the past.

I'm still hanging in there, barely. As others have said, they jump around way too much trying to cover too much in too little time and it gets annoying because by the time you feel like you're grasping it the hour is over. They need to get that squared away soon or they're not gonna make it. Its like the writers have ADD or something.

Baretta
Kojak...Who loves you Baby?

Rockford Files more detective like Magnum PI
also the one with the lazy eyed police detective.... Peter, I cant remember the last name or the show.

The Los Angeles County Fire Department re-numbered station 60 located on the Universal lot to station 51 a few years ago. The station houses an Engine and a Squad. The tram ride people can take rolls right by the station and the tourists get a kick out of seeing the number 51 on the rigs.
HAHAHA...when I worked down south, West Valley, I would go to that stattion to eat lunch. I would park the cart out front next to the rigs, people would really like that. It was like a CHiPs/Emergency crossover LMAO.

Cops- It counts, right?

CHiPs- Ever since I was little, I've loved this show. It made me want to pursue a career in the CHP. A bit disappointed I won't likely receive training in hang-gliding or PWC operation at the Academy...unlike Ponch and John, lol!

Southland- Amazing show. I loved the fact that they used authentic uniforms and vehicles. According to an anecdote on IMDB, the show was so authentic, people who saw the actors between takes believed that Ben McKenzie had switched careers!

Nash Bridges- Another one I grew up on. This show had it all. It was set in an amazing place, The main character had an awesome car, and it was kind of funny to see Cheech Marin as a cop.

Law and Order- Never gets old. The spin-offs are ok, but nothing beats the original.

NYPD Blue- The only cop show I couldn't watch when I was younger, so I've only recently seen some re-runs. A good show, it was really at its best in the Dennis Franz/Jimmy Smits years. Once they brought in Ricky Schroeder, it kind of went down hill.

Ten sounds a little more like a season with about an extra month worth of viewing compared to the last seasons. Thanks for the reminder! I watched the first "Hawaii Five-O" and thought it was ridiculous, and I read in yesterday's paper that it has a very high rating in the cop shows category. Guess I've been missing out. Anyone watch it regularly?

Agree on Five-0. I've watched a few episodes and it's just not doing anything for me.

I really like it. As a matter of fact I enjoy even more now that TNT has taken over production. Check it out (Tuesday's @10:00) and tell me what you think.

Good one last night. Even if I watch live, I always record in case anyone interrupts my concentration! "Leave me alone --I'm watching 'Southland.'"

Did you notice the less "bleeping" and a few choice words allowed to fly?

Did anyone see the new Alaska State Troopers series on the NGEO (National Geographic) network? It comes on at 7pm Saturday nights. It was ok.

I caught a couple episodes of this show on Nat. Geo. It is actually a very interesting show and the dynamics of the Troopers roles are amazing. Having to use a multitude of vehicles and means to get to remote villages, terrains and suspects is eye opening. In one episode, I saw one trooper use a plane, boat, vehicle and helicopter!! Now that's a busy day for anyone!!

The unique issues they face with regards to "villagers" is also amazing. Having a village liason serve as a local crime advocate and hold suspects until the Troopers can arrive!! Talk about Citizens on Patrol!!

I discovered that Highway Patrol -- the classic TV series produced at CHP's request and featuring essentially everything '50s CHP except the word "California" -- is back on the air.

It's on ThisTV, a national network, so Highway Patrol can be watched in most cities. I've seen it recently in San Diego (channel 69-3) and San Francisco (channel 42-3), and in other states.

I love this show  so I wrote an article about it -- facts, trivia, the works:
http://www.boomersphere.com/story/highway-patrol-rolls-again-10-4

If anyone spots any errors, or has additions to what I wrote, please let me know.

How do I find subchannels???

How do I find subchannels???

It mostly boils down to having the right TV and antenna, and sometimes to also being in a "good" location.

Subchannels are a feature of digital TV broadcasting (the big switchover of two years ago). A single TV station that has converted to digital can now transmit multiple channels -- one main channel, and several subchannels.

To directly watch over-the-air digital TV you need a TV that can directly receive digital television stations. Usually this means a TV purchased in the past 3 years or so. Or maybe an older analog TV with an external converter will work, haven't tried that. The TV must be connected to an antenna.

If you don't see the subchannels by simply stepping channel-to-channel, you might have to have the TV re-scan for channels. Main channels are usually something like 42 or 42-1 (sometimes written 42.1), while that station's subchannels are 42-2, 42-3, etc.

If you have a modern digital TV but only are connected to a cable service, you need to add an antenna. It will give you access to subchannels, perhaps additional main channels that cable doesn't carry, and often a much better picture.

In many areas, the antenna can be a small, and perhaps located indoors. Costco has been selling one that some people pin to the wall above the TV. Some people have to put the antenna outside, ideally on the roof.

However, in areas where an antenna can't pick up much (if anything) so cable is necessary, the only recourse is to pressure the cable company to add subchannels. They're supposed to, sort-of; FCC regulations require cable companies to carry the local stations; the debate is whether this also includes subchannels of those stations.

I'm often in a motorhome, which has a digital TV insides, and little antenna on the roof. I can pick up main TV channels almost anywhere, and 95% of the time, subchannels too. I've done this in San Diego, LA, Fresno (including west of it on I-5), San Francisco Bay Area, Palm Springs area, plus many more places outside California.

UPDATE: It seems to be somewhat easy to watch the classic Highway Patrol TV show ("21-50 to Headquarters"), because ThisTV network seems to be carried in most cities on a subchannel of one of the major stations (sometimes it's on a suburban station).

Recently I've watched ThisTV, using a little antenna on my motorhome, on local TV stations in San Francisco Bay Area, Los Angeles, San Diego, Palm Springs, Reno, Eureka, Fresno, Eugene and Portland Oregon, Seattle Washington, and some I'm forgetting.

The main challenge might be the time of day -- I've seen the show at 9PM but usually it's more like 2AM Pacific time. My wife and dog don't like me watching a show with sirens and gun fights at 2AM so I try to record it.

Gonna be a problem, as the wife really likes Body of Proof, and I do enjoy Southland. We don't watch much on the tube, but it seems when we do, there is always a minor conflict.

Maybe we should get another T.V. set. ( are they called that anymore?)

She might be disappointed.

I like the British "programmes" Traffic Cops, Motorway Cops, and Road Wars.

I'm always impressed with the agencies' high level of professionalism. It's kind of fun to see how laws are different over there. They've also got some interesting "kit" including Land Rover and Jaguar patrol vehicles.

Southland rules around here. I have had to miss out on Body of Proof the last two weeks (will look at the episodes either On Demand or on the computer) because I have another recording going too. Besides that, there are two new Storage Wars at the same time, but they're also shown in the middle of the night so I can record them then. Anyone else noticed that the imitation "blood" is too red now and looks like tempera paint? Real blood does not look like that. It's especially noticeable in the CSI Miami series. Am I a couch potato? Naaaaaawwwwww! Is the new Alcatraz show any good, I wonder?

I saw the back to back episodes. It is kind of an interesting story line, if they don't get too sideways.....

When Southland switched over to TNT from NBC I noticed the language got a little more....umm,colorful. I like it because I think it gives the show a more realistic feel.
