View Full Version : On the lighter side....
Figured I'd start a "lighter" thread...I read so much into the "serious" part of the job, but I wanted to get a cross-section of:
When you get home, grab a "cold one" (beer / soda / water, whatever your "flavor" ), utlimately grab "the remote" and click on the set...
What do you watch to take that "edge" off? (If you don't have that "edge" while your at work, you might be too lax at work).
For the last 19 years of marriage life (geez, has it been T H A T L O N G ? ? ? ), my wife still likes to watch drama stuff, like ER, CSI stuff, etc.  (For the most part, I can't stand to be in the same room when that stuff is playing).
However, being somewhat opposites, I tend to like comedy...
So the list starts:
1.."King of Queens"
2. Seinfield"
3. "Cops" - occasionally (hey, there's some humor in it sometimes), but I do find myself eventually yelling at the TV, so I grab a video of King
of Queens and insert into machine
4. Old "Dick Van Dyke" and "The Andy Griffith Show" re-runs (my kids get a kick outa Barney...and Warren)

I really don't watch much television, but the show, "King of Queens" is one of my favorites. It has to be one of the funniest shows on the air. When that show is on, my wife generally knows I am useless and deaf until the end credits.

I very seldom have time off (truly) and what time off I do have is spent sleeping!
If I am lucky enough to sit and watch TV for a while, it's a battle for the remote. When I win, this is what's on:
If I'm in the mood, I enjoy CSI on occassion. It's recently become hubby's favorite, so I get CSI all the damn time.
On days when it's been a good day at work, and I only have a few minutes TV time, I like to watch COPS for the idiot factor.
( I hate things like World's deadliest pursuits - they usually have some officer getting plammed somewhere, and while yes it is a fact of life, I dont have to SEE it.) Get enough of that on the radio, thank you very much.
I like MASH - I grew up with it, and it's still entertaining. It was on so long ago, and ran for so long, that most of the time I can now catch an episode I don't remember, so it "seems" new..... plus it's funny without being crude, and while the reality of war is tragic and violent, they don't dwell on the violence and don't need to show it all the time.
Even though it's inane, and I know a lot of people hate it, I will admit, I like watching FRIENDS (let the slamming begin). It's so far out from reality that it's simply just hilarious to me. As if I had it that good at "their" age, indeed!
If I actually have time, and am inclinded to relax and sit a spell, I'd rather watch a movie, preferably one I haven't seen yet. Recent viewings include:
Crash - outstanding
The Brothers Grimm - weird, cool CGI, but in general a waste of my money
Empire Falls - compelling.
You can tell by how far behind in my movie viewing I am, I don't get out much ;-)

I tend to like to watch mind of mencia and whatever else is on comedy central. I occasionaly find myself watching cops and law and order but I usually end up getting annoyed and turning them off. Other than that i really don't have time to watch tv.

Good call 10-7. We needed a lighter look at things. In order to keep this in the General forum, rather than the Off-Topic forum, this thread should focus on reducing job-specific stress.
BTW, I love Mythbusters and Iron Chef . . . Can't even ruminate about the job while watching either of them. Am totally consumed while sailing or mountain biking.
I went ahead and moved it... Just got finished watching a Tivo'ed Mythbusters, as a matter of fact. And Reno 911, gotta' love it.
I like the cartoons: South Park, Futurama, Family Guy & American Dad.

well, if we HAD tv, haha...
i got hooked to a few shows when staying with family during the academy. "the office," "scrubs," "my name is earl," "er," "desperate housewives," and "snl" are probably my current favorites. when we had cable just after we were first married, we found ourselves staying up all hours of the night watching the history channel and the food network. i have the hots for alton brown (smarts and a sense of humor go a looooong way) and my husband swears our next daughter will be named rachel rae. "but rae is a family name!" bah humbug! ;)
Believe it or not, my all-time favorite stress-relieving show was "Beavis and Butthead".
I watch very little tv, and even fewer movies - IMO, most of it is garbage and/or thinly-veiled liberal propaganda, and I have zero respect for 99.9% of the spoiled, phony, uppity Hollywood people. All I usually watch is sports, CMT, or the news (once in a while.) For pure comic relief and innocent fun, I wish one of the channels like TVLand would air weekly re-runs of "Hee Haw" - that was a truly classic show!

Mac, hate to bring this thread back to reality, if you want Hee Haw, just roll by my office. Damm, it was a good dream while it lasted.

Saving Private Ryan
The Patriot

Gladiator
The Sixth Sense
Sledgehammer (How can you not like a show where a guy talks to his gun?)(You get points if you actually remember this show)
Hunter
MacGyver
A-Team (don't hate it)
Knight Rider (How can you not like a show where a guy talks to his car?)
Lethal Weapon I, II, III, and IV
The Simpsons

Sounds like my kinda place! Actually, I like your TV choices about the best out of all of them - the "old school" cartoons and programs hearken back to a time when TV was fun and a lot more innocent - not the brainwashing/propaganda tool it's become nowadays. I'd much rather watch any of the shows you mentioned than anything that's on the tube now.

Crash - outstanding
Agree 100%
I am more of a Discovery Channel and History Channel freak. If nothing good is on there, then its Speed Channel.
This morning, when I should have been sleeping, I was watching NASA Tv on the local college network as the Shuttle landed (5am-ish)
. Actually, since they wake up the astronauts up around 2330 pst when they are up there, I was watching a lot of NASA Tv the last two weeks as I went to sleep and when I woke up.

We just turned the cable off. Now I can have my fill of Baby Einstein, Clifford the Big Red Dog, and Mary Poppins. Heck, why pay to have trash brought into the house?
Those would be the kids' movies, not mine...
