Well I finally signed the contract and I leave for Marine Corps Basic Training on Monday. I signed up for 5 years with a Security Forces contract. I think im also going to take the Recon Indoc. test. This should put me out of the Marine Corps at 22 and hopefully into a CHP academy by 23.

Thanks guys, I really appreciate the encouragement. It will be the biggest challenge of my life, but it will be an honor to serve my country. Also, I hope that the experience and training I get will make me a better CHP officer when the time comes.

Thank you so much for choosing to defend our country! Good luck in the service, and I think you'll be have a better time adjusting to life at the academy after having gone through boot camp..It won't be so much of a shock! Plus, those veteran points won't hurt at all when you apply..Neither will the GI Bill backpay from the academy if you choose to go that way:smile: Good luck!

Wait a minute...on another forum you said you were joining the Navy on a Master at Arms / SEAL Challenge contract. You said the USMC wouldn't allow you to join the MP's at 17 and that you were going to sign the Navy contract "tomorrow" (back in May).

What gives?

What MOS series does Security Forces fall under? I've never heard of that for the Marine Corps except only in short term B Billets.

It falls under Infantry ( 0300 ) series.

I see so you're actually enlisting in Infantry with the Security Forces Option. That's what confused me about that.

So you were literally one day from signing the Navy contract with the $40,000 bonus, the Master at Arms guarantee and SEAL Challenge but turned it down?

Good luck!

There is an old joke about why the Navy takes Marines with them wherever they go, but this is a family forum so I won't share it.

Basically yes. I figure that if I still have the bug when im 22, I can always transfer to the Navy for the SEAL Challenge when my enlistment is up in the Marine Corps and hold off on becomming a CHP officer for another couple of years.

Good luck to you also. I would consider the Marine Corps for Military Police if you actually want to do some LE work. Army MP's are basically becomming glorified Infantry. Marine Corps MP's main mission is still LE, not Convoy operations and such like the Army is doing.

All this service talk reminds me of this GREAT courtroom scene from A Few Good Men:

Son, we live in a world that has walls, and those walls have to be guarded by men with guns. Whose gonna do it? You? You, Lt. Weinburg? I have a greater responsibility than you could possibly fathom. You weep for Santiago, and you curse the marines. You have that luxury. You have the luxury of not knowing what I know. That Santiago's death, while tragic, probably saved lives. And my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, saves lives. You don't want the truth because deep down in places you don't talk about at parties, you want me on that wall, you need me on that wall. We use words like honor, code, loyalty. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent defending something. You use them as a punchline. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the blanket of the very freedom that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said thank you, and went on your way, Otherwise, I suggest you pick up a weapon, and stand a post. Either way, I don't give a damn what you think you are entitled to.

Hey SR-25, have you studied your Full Metal Jacket?

"Holy Jesus...what is that? WHAT THE F#%K IS THAT?!?! WHAT IS THAT, Private Pyle?!?!?"
"Sir, a jelly doughnut sir."
"A jelly doughnut?!? How did it get here?!?!"
"Sir, I took it from the mess hall!"
"Is chow allowed in the barracks, Private Pyle?!"
"Sir, no sir!"
"Are you allowed to eat jelly doughnuts?!"
"Sir, no sir!"
"And why is that, Private Pyle?!?"
"Sir, because I'm too heavy."
"Because you're a DISGUSTING FATBODY!!!"

(One of my top three all-time favorite movies!!!)

I've looked into the Marine Corps and they don't like "homeschooled" students. Which means they classify me as tier 2 so the only way they'll accept me is if I have a college degree.

:biggrin:shock:ubt:

On the other hand, the Army will pretty much take anyone...

The quote from Jack Nicholson in "A Few Good Men" is absolutely classic - and it certainly DOES ring true to law enforcement too. He had a couple of quotes about the Navy in that movie that Marines probably get a kick out of - "I like you Navy boys - you give us rides", and one I won't quote here that has something to do with their white dress uniforms (anybody who's seen the movie knows exactly what I'm talking about!)

Full Metal Jacket, OTOH - one of my absolute favorite movies of all time! The only other movie I can think of that has near as many memorable/quotable phrases is "Tombstone". Gunny Hartman (R. Lee Ermey) did a great job as the D.I. in FMJ.....I've seen that movie so many times I can just about quote every one of his lines. :D:

Back on topic - Congrats to you, SR-25....and I salute you for your service to our country. We're in a sore time right now, where we desperately need more Patriots in this nation! We've come full circle back to the '60s where it's more fashionable to thumb your nose at "the Establishment" and degrade those who serve and sacrifice to preserve our freedom. Flaming pantywaist liberalism is alive and well (unfortunately), and everybody from the ignorant, spoiled, pampered freaks of Hollywood to the hand-wringing, bleating musicians on MTV have taken up the cause. Funny how they're the first to cry out about "freedom of speech", but then complain when people exercise that exact same freedom to speak out against them and boycott their movies and music! (are you listening, Dixie Twits?!?) How a high school drop-out actor or musician can claim to know more about foreign affairs than a President or National Security Advisor with multiple college degrees and years of experience is completely beyond me....and how anybody in their right mind would even pay attention to what those ignoramuses have to say when they open their uneducated holes is even more unbelievable!!!

Those lines go like this...

Lt. Kendrick, may I call you John?
No, you may not.
Have I done something to offend you?
No, I like all you Navy boys. Every time we gotta go some place to fight, you fellas always give us a ride.

I want you to stand there in your faggoty white uniform, and with your Harvard mouth extend me some f****** courtesy.

My understanding is that, as a former DI, R. Lee Ermey was the Marine Corps advisor when they were making that movie (FMJ). He may have still been enlisted, I don't remember. When Stanley Kubrick asked him if he wanted to play the DI he said yes, but only if he could do it "his way." Though times have changed a bit since then, it was supposed to reflect the nature of the MCRD during that time period... That's the way I heard it; if someone knows better, please share...

SR-25, it is a tremendous decision you are making for your future. Between the VA benefits, MGIB benefits, and the discipline/personal development, you will have something that will have a profound impact on your life forever. Kind of like the gift that keeps on giving. You'll be part of a brotherhood that can never be taken away and, in my opinion, when you do reach the CHP Academy, you'll be leaps and bounds ahead of those who did not choose that route. GOOD LUCK!!

Thank all of you for your encouragement and words of wisdom. Ill let you know how everything went 3 months from now when I actually have acess to a computer again. But I do have a question. When should I start my application process in relation to my discharge date?

Well I just graduated from Marine Corps Basic Training. My next stop will be at Camp Pendleton for SOI. Are any of you current CHP officers who were Marines? If so, how would you compare life at the CHP Academy to USMC Basic Training? As far as PT, liberty, etc...

Congrats on your graduation. I did the same route you took. 0331- Machinegunner/ 8152- Marine Security Force Guard/ 8154- MCSF CQB Team Member. Good times. Your going to get some outstanding training. Try to get to FAST if you can.
Im not a CHP officer, Im a deputy who likes talking to cops...which is why Im here......but I wouldnt worry about coordinating your discharge date with your application to a law enforcement agency just yet. I would say a rule of thumb is about 6-8 months. But in my case, my Battalion, 1/6, was on deployment up until about two weeks before my EAS.
The next four years are going to turn you into a completely different person than you are today. And four years in the life of an Infantryman is a lifetime and the world will be a different place when you walk out the main gate for the last time. Trust me....as much as you tell yourself you wont look back...you will.

Pendelton SOI.......HA! enjoy the Microwave. Mt M.F. has nothing on it! When you get to the Great Dismal Swamp for MCSF school.....pray you arent there in the winter!!!!! Stay in touch:biggrin:
