I've been researching perks to being a cop that are not direct CHP benefits. Are there any officers in CHPForumsland who have-or know any officer who has- taken advantage of HUDs Officer Next Door program? My boyfriend is just bouncing off the walls about this program, but I think he's living in dream world...yes, lots of nice suburban homes get forclosed on (and more will) these days, but I don't think he 'gets' what HUD targeted neighborhood imples. He's, haahaa, thinking nice suburban middle class (my personl idea of hell). I keep thinking back to the thread about taking cars home.

Anyway, first-hand info greatly appreciated!

Good luck... I looked into it several years ago. If I recall correctly, HUD gets with the cities and the local governments set up particular areas where this applies. It does not apply to any house being forclosed on. I looked at about 10 houses in So Cal Riverside area and they were all HOOD! If your boyfriend thinks hes going to find a great house in a great neighborhood......it aint gonna happen. You also have to commit to living there for a couple of years. And they do check and God help you if you turn it into a rental!!!!
In regards to take home cars...Ive had a take home for 8 years.....LOVE IT and have never had any problems.

I worked with a guy who bought one. Somewhere on the HUD site is a listing of all the areas and/or properties. Guy I know got lucky and bought something decent in Pittsburgh. As best, you're going to get somewhere you need bars on the windows and that needs a lot of love -- worst case, you won't feel safe going home.

step-brother-in-law (urban legend intro) bought one and turned it over for a few bucks. He was Corrections...(don't be a hater) and it worked out. I personally wouldn't have let my wife go to the store after dark in the neighborhood they were in...but HEY...differnt strokes... ya know?

well, shoots, sounds perfect for us! we're currently paying $2125 a month (it will drop a bit in october, thank goodness!) to RENT about 650 square feet across the street from the local crips. i'd rather be paying to buy a slum with bars than paying to rent one, i guess? i haven't yet felt terribly unsafe, but i also don't feel terribly safe. we're veeeery quiet about what my husband does because of the area and the neighbors. i do worry about someone finding out that he's chp and he doesn't ticket anyone who lives near us (though he's not had anything more than minor infractions in those cases).

At half-price, you didn't think you were getting something nearby, did you? ;)

Go for the rural posts Makakona. When he's done his time down there it's time to head north or out of the urban jungle. You'd be saving about 15K a month if you lived up here and you'd have a yard free of stray bullets.

I know there are still nice places in California...but...geeez..they are becoming few and far between. Even out in the "sticks" there are meth. labs and pot farms. I'm so sick of California. Is the grass greener?..sure it is..but I for one cannot wait to leave. I was born and raised in the Bay area and apart from my military time have always been here. When did it become OK to blast your music and be downright rude on all accounts? I gotta tell you that it is not the same in other parts of this country. I recently returned from a cross country trip and it was refreshing...the weather sucks..but still refreshing.

I always wanted to transfer to the "sticks" but I was afraid that my kids wouldn't have anything to do....I would not own a 5000 acre ranch, therefore, they wouldn't have farm chores..so what do bored kids do? Why they get into trouble, of course. That is why I have stayed in an urban area..oppurtunity for my kids. You gotta admit that kids have more oppurtunities in less rural area..jobs/sports/friends/activities. Could I make as much money and do less work/less stress elsewhere? Sure, but I'm toughing it out in the city.

Only 12-13 years to go...but who is counting!

Wow, a $15,000 a month savings? I had no idea it was so expensive in those urban areas.

Ooops. My bad. How about a $1,500 a month savings. Rent ranges from $500 to $700 for a 1200 sq. ft. home in rural areas.
