I was talking to an officer today and he said that the written part of the entry exam will no longer be given after the 22nd of this month, any truth to that?

Rumors, rumors, rumors,,,, OK, it's almost true. Begining with this upcoming testing cycle, applicants will no longer be required to complete an essay during the written test. A couple of other changes are in progress regarding the remaining tests but they are still working out the logistics of them all.

I was told by the same officer that it is do to the large ammount of officers expected to retire in the near future, CHP is going to be hurting for people.

When they doubled the CHP under the "expansion" back in the late sixties, naysayers said, "Oh my God they lowered the standards. We're doomed."
When they hired women in 1974 the doomsday crowd said, "This is the end of the CHP."
When they did away with some height standards, same hue and cry was raised.
I came on in 1974. There were some dipsticks in my class. There were a lot of good people too.
I worked in nine offices. I met a lot of people who seemed to have slipped through the cracks and never should have been hired. Most were outstanding officers and managers.
I retired in 2001. There were some no loads in my office. There were some great people too.
I know many officers who have come on since I retired. Some are not the best. Some are. Some even post on here or run this board.
But...Hey it is a big agency and overwhelmingly the people who get hired and make it off of probation period are fine people who do a great job under trying circumstances.
In other words, the CHP is just fine and will continue to move forward and to reflect the society it serves.
If you read carefully on this board you can even pick out the potential applicants who have their shit together and those who are probably wasting their time.
Maybe they are just making some needed changes in the testing process?
Who knows, but the job is still the best job most of us will ever have. That includes those on here who brag about all the money they made elsewhere and how much LAPD etc might pay.
I took a long time to say I don't believe the standards have been lowered. Changed maybe but not lowered.
The bottom line will remain, if you can't kick ass and take names while running your report through your head and then go and write it using computer skills and decent English, you will fall by the wayside. Those who meet the spec will go on and will over the years comment about how much the standards have been lowered. I know. I have been guilty of it myself!

I never looked at it that way, it seems like people on this forum are always preaching about "standards" and I read about alot of put downs in this forum about how some officers have slipped in the doorway. But I understand what youre saying, people that make the cut will be officers in this department. I understand....

Nobody said anything about lowering standards. Changes in the testing process are being made. Part of the deal in elimimating the essay is that applicants will be required to achieve a higher score on the multiple choice portion of the test. You know what they say when you assume..... Keep your eyes and ears open, more changes are on the way.

It doesn't matter if they eliminate the essay or not - you'll still have to pass report writing in the Academy, which claims more than it's fair share of Cadets. I don't see doom and gloom here.

That's both a scary and sad thought in some ways - but point taken.

The bottom line will remain, if you can't kick ass and take names while running your report through your head and then go and write it using computer skills and decent English, you will fall by the wayside.
LOL...well said!
