Does anyone know if the CHP Mustangs (all of them) ever came equipped with an automatic tranny? There's a guy in NC trying to sell one that he claims is from the Bay Area and is in good restorable condition. I never heard of any. AL

We had a small 5.0 club in high school. It contained an 86, 87, 2 88's, 91, and 95 5.0L mustangs. The 87 was an auto tranny and was an ex-highway patrol vehicle. This vehicle was extremely fast and felt light as a feather during acceleration. Good luck.
I can't speak to every single Mustang ever put into service, but I saw/drove my share of them and never saw or heard of an automatic version. '82 - '84 were 4-speeds, '85 and up were 5-speeds.

Same here. We had to have a ride a long with the Sgt. to show we could drive a stick.

I drove Mustangs all the time because most of the guys in the office didn't like them as they were so small and all of them were manual trans. Only cars like that with auto trans were the 79 Z-28's. Don't know about the newer Camaro's, but as far as Mustangs I never heard of any with auto's..

That could be a real fun ride for the Sgt

Every source I've heard from says that the CHP only bought SSP Mustangs with manual transmissions. The Highway Patrols from other states could have bought SSP's with auto transmissions. Georgia for instance only bought autos IIRC. These cars move around a lot (mine had been in Delaware for 10 years when I found it), so that car in NC could be from any jurisdiction after all these years.
There are several clues to help identify where a SSP Mustang originally served. The DSO number on the driver's door VIN sticker should be 6-digits, and the first two numbers ID's the sales district. There should be a 2nd Buck Tag on the radiator support, which should give SSP-specific details. There are other clues as well (too many to list here), so shoot me a PM if you have any questions about the car in question.

I used to own a '28 RHD Model A Phaeton. Family obligations forced the sale before I finished it (I sold it to a restorer in Arizona). I still have the go-fast four banger parts I had collected, in the hope of picking up another Model A in a couple of years when we become 'empty-nesters'.

Thats to bad you had to get rid of it. I have a '30 coupe and a '31 tudor that have been on the back burner for the past 5 years. Both are almost road worthy but this job kinda put a hold on things. I used to work in a shop that was ok with working on your own toys after work or lunch breaks. Tudor has a '53 Merc V8 and the coupe has a '49 8BA motor.
Really wishing I would have kept the 4banger in the tudor it was a screamer before I pulled it out. Maybe one day I will build up a roadster with a hoped up 4 banger.
