LA eases impounds of unlicensed drivers.
One thing I don't get here, and it might be the writer or editor of the article, but it says they did so out of being fair to illegals. There are a lot of fairness issues to consider out there, and the courts have handed down rulings that were meant to address racial discrimination, gender discrimination, age discrimination, etc. But fairness to lawbreakers? I see no basis for that one

Is it just for illegal immigrants, or across the board. Meaning could this apply to a 20 year old American man/woman as well??

Their selling point is purported to be that it was because the previous policy was unfair to illegals. the policy is supposed to be the policy for all of course, but propelling reason seems quite absurd

Los Angeles is a "Sanctuary City" for illegal immigrants. 'Nuff said.

"The new rules, Beck said, were an attempt to mitigate somewhat "the current reality, which is that for a vast number of people, who are a valuable asset to our community and who have very limited resources, their ability to live and work in L.A. is severely limited by their immigration status"

If chief Beck said this then he is a freaking idiot.

yeah they are an asset to the community when they cash their welfare check, get their WIC coupons, go to the emergency room for a head cold, get a free ride on a bus to school, and obtain free breakfasts and lunches at school. Chief Beck probably wouldn't feel the same if one of these unlicensed drivers 20001'd one of his family members and put them in the ICU.

Honestly, I've spoken with many people of that mindset, and I don't think an experience of that type would change their actions. Maybe one or two out of ten would, but mostly they would still move forward with the original plan.

On that being an asset thing:

I see where they conjure that up. They do make the economy bigger; you cannot argue that point. That's not necessarily an asset of course. Volumne is not always a payoff, unless you're at the upper levels of the pyramid. They may be an asset to those at the top, but below a certain point where the majority of us are, they are just more competition.
Now there is one wild card here, and I set out to find this number late last year. I requested records from the state on how much money was withheld from the paychecks of people using false or stolen tax ID's. The presumption being that they don't file a return and therefore the state keeps all of their "contributions". If the numbers are what I think they are, they are an asset, but still not to us at the lower levels again. If you consider that money withheld but never having deductions claimed against would be a giant income source for politicians. Assuming there were 2 million people without work authorization in California, but working anyway, you could start extrapolating the average amount withheld for state taxes.
My off-the-cuff estimate is somewhere between 250 million to 400 million per year (pre-economic meltdown)

The state first ignored my request, then deflected, then denied it, then complied, but hasn't provided yet. My last three contacts with them were, we're sending it by the 3/3/11, and we're sending it last week, and today..."that person is out today"
And here it is sunshine week...who would have guessed

These "assests" have taken the budget away from CHP to replace retiring officers. So instead of my family having good medical and other finalncial help from me putting my life on the line, I get to wait for God knows how long now to get into an acadmey class, while in the mean time my tax dollars pay for these "assests" to be driving, immigrating, and living here illegally in the first place. Makes perfect sense.

Can we also raise the amount that those on drugs and not willing to work receive in welfare as well?

Fine. P-paul it and call the men in green while you are waiting for the 11-85. I love re-patriating illegals. "San Diego, will you start Border Patrol for a possible?" You want to commit a misdemeanor while here illegally? OK, you got caught. Now you get to go back home.

Wait until they approach you near Christmas time, proudly announcing that they're here illegally and asking you to call Border Patrol. They want a free ride home (deportation) for the holidays so they can visit their families. Yes, it's happened to me. Several times.

San Francisco adopted similar policy eight months ago. It goes like this if you pull someone over and they are 14600 the car is gone however if they are 12500 the driver has 20 minutes (from time of notification to dispatch) to get a valid licensed driver with insurance to come to scene and take car. The 12500 driver has to sign this legal form dept came up with and then car is released to new driver.

It is a matter of time before a start up company for 12500 drivers start in SF,,,we deliver in 20 minutes licensed driver..with a catchy 800 number...lol

Well, there's a way to fund ICE operations, and a public/private partnership I could get behind. And..it could really give the term "catchy" 800 number a new twist

If chief Beck said this then he is a freaking idiot. It seems to me that LAPD has had a lot of spineless/ineffective chiefs over the years. It sounds like Beck may be continuing the tradition. :hitwall:

I know Joseph Wambaugh could give us an earfull on the subject of bad LAPD leadership.

+1, we would offend even more folks if we publicized the descriptors of 20001/20002 suspects/arrests.

I've never been a fan of sucking up 12500 impounds at a DUI checkpoint, but all my impounds are a result of an observed violation/traffic stop. You don't want me taking a car for no/suspended license? Try driving the speed limit with current registration. Don't blame me for doing my job when you can't drive within 20 miles of the speed limit.
