Typical know-it-all, so-called "police expert" commentator spreading misinformation.....the TASER doesn't "knock you out."

To the original question - I've seen them used a number of times, and they're HIGHLY effective. They subdue the person quickly without causing lasting injury to either him/her or the officers. Every agency should have them, and every officer should carry them.

Do you think that some of that type of training will be incorporated into to the academy training program not just with the CHP but all LE agencies?

Getting "all LE agencies" to do ANYTHING uniformly is 99.9% impossible, so I can't even speak to the possibility of that. However, there's a very good chance that CHP will have TASERS statewide in the not-too-far-off future. If we get TASERS, there will be Academy training - count on that.

As I am sure you know - we DO have tasers in limited amounts and the Academy already is getting some of the training. (At least they are getting "Zapped" in addition to OC'ed)

Cool! As much as I know that I am a retard for wanting to get "zapped" and OC'ed, I still want to know how they feel.

Just for info: CTC II-05 was zapped, however CTC III-05 was not. I'm not sure about IV-05.

Wow really?!! You Know...it really hurts...when I was in the Air Force we had to do the Zap Test in Police School. All I can say is that if I ever do get the training again...Im not looking forward to it...that or the OC spray. It just hurts...

ctc iv-05 was not zapped, though it was a big topic of discussion at the spousal panel. a few spouses expressed that they would rather purchase a taser to keep in the home in lieu of an off-duty weapon. by a show of hands, not many of the significant others had guns in the home or had even just handled a gun before. there was palpable tension in the room when the talk turned to weapons. kind of disconcerting.

my husband has always maintained that he would rather walk through gas chambers 20 times than to get one spray of oc in the face.

and once again, the use of the word "retard" in this thread is insensitive and beyond offensive.

Its understandable, when I was in the service..in order for me to carry OC...Oleoreisn Capsicum spray..argh, I had to take a taste test basically..Honesty..I'd rather do tear gas again too. When they spray it...they put it directly in your face. Im sorry if Im the weakest link on this one...but OC is not awesome.

The CHP has a spousal panel? What is that for?

My wife did it...back in the day....it is for the new wives to question some wives and brass and life/living with an Officer. Some people found it helpful, others worthless. Thats the way it was about ten years ago...don't know about now.

the day before graduation, all "significant others" (we had a husband, some girlfriends, and partners in there) are invited to attend a forum held at the academy. they have staff talk to us, then the crisis intervention people (help, officers... what are howarth and rashida's titles???) give us a lot of info on how our so's might change, how our family might be affected, et cetera. they had three wives there to discuss topics (pay, moving, and so on) and to answer questions.

tiredmotor, i think opinions are still about the same. i didn't really gain much from it, but it was interesting nonetheless. i had friends there, which made it really bearable. for others, i think it's a HUGE tool to be used to their advantage. it was obvious who had issues with things and hopefully those concerns were addressed. one person there told me she didn't know how i could "go on," knowing the dangers of the job. she was seemingly obsessed with "what if" and it made me wonder how long they'd be happy living an le life.

most of the women there had major concerns about the firearms. i got my first gun when i was eight, haha, and we've always had guns in the home, so it's not an issue for us. i think the firearm discussion was probably the most important segment, though. some of the staff gave good tips as to how to handle kids and guns (contrary to the presented mindset that hiding them away under lock and key and never discussing them is best) and stuff like that. i felt very much like i was "outside, looking in," but it was at least interesting.

Like you experience, Makakona, my wife said there were a lot of whiny spouses at the spousal panel when she was there not too long ago. A lot of them were shocked and terrified about their Chippy spouses taking their guns home. I guess I can understand that if they are someone that has never seen or been taught how to handle a gun, but, it seems they would have given it more thought being partnered with a future officer! Thankfully, my wife likes guns almost as much as I do, so it isn't an issue at our house.

the spouse took the cadets gun home?

no, he was talking about spouses feeling uncomfortable with the gun around. Cadets cannot take their firearm, or batons home until after graduation. My girlfriends father is more uneasy with the gun than my girlfriend is.

The taser is a very effective police tool; the company I work for is going to sell Tasers holsters fitting french police specifications; 1 month ago I attended a training at Taser France and I have been "tased"; OUCH ! I still remember the pain and all the feelings I got; I think it is the better police tool after a gun.
Does someone can explain why the driver was chased ?
