So I watch 4 guys wrestle snow chains onto their Tundra for about a half-hour this morning in Shaver. They pull up to my checkpoint and it looks like my 3-year-old installed them, I mean, it almost looked like they tried to do everything backwards. We get to chatting while I point out how to fix their chains. Really nice guys, clean cut, early-mid 20's, Florida plates with a DOD sticker on the lower driver side window...
"Where you from?"
[a nearby Naval base]
"What do you guys do?"
[Uhm... we're pilots.]
"All four of you?"
... [Yeah.]
"Man, that's cool. Whaddaya fly?"
[... F-18's.]
"Dude, that's awesome! ... so, just curious, how much do those cost?
[... about $67 Million each.]
Totally made my day, best "priceless" moment I've had in a looong time. Pretty sure their girlfriends (looking, laughing, and snapping pics) were the only ones having more fun than I was. Tried to weasel a ride along, but my first name isn't Senator so that died hard and fast.
In their defense, the chains were borrowed and didn't have instructions.
And they were super nice guys. I guess it's better than dunking your chopper in Tahoe...
