View Full Version : Psych Appeal underway...
I have asked about this in the past and nobody seemed to have any first hand info.
Looks like I will be paving the way for CHPFORUMS.COM.
Here it goes:
I sent my intent to appeal letter and got a letter back from SPB stating that it will take 30 days for someone to take my case.
Time will tell...

Alec,
I forget what or why you are appealing, but did hear on a TV talk show the other day that the MMPI (Minnesota Mutual Psychiatric Inventory) test and other such tests are "merely a snapshot" of a person on that day and at that time.
The results may be vastly different even a few weeks or months later.
Of course that could be a double edged sword.

Correct. After I took the MMPI I had fun talking to my Psych teacher about how retarded some of it is.

I find your use of the word "retarded" interesting. Tell me about it...

oh, i don't know... i always find it oh-so-endearing when people use a reverse euphemism to degrade a collective group of people. what's interesting is that stupid things are always called "gay" and "retarded," never "big, black man-ish" or "mexican gangsta' thug-like." wonder what the shrinks have to say about THAT...

Hey Alec, Just curious, how long did it take you to find out that you did not pass psych?

it's so unfortunate that someone has yet to invent a way to read tone through the internet; the sarcasm was lost. i wasn't going for chuckles.

1. I am appealing because I got DQ'd by failing the oral psych. Simply appealing the decision and hoping it will get over turned so I can simply enter the academy without going through the process again.
2. Interesting notes about the MMPI though.

You gotta love the questions the MMPI asks.
Do you feel angry? True/ False <---Hmmm, after 500 questions i imagine the real answer is True
Abe Lincoln is a better President than George Washington? True/False <--- This sounds like an essay question to me.
I like to work with flowers? True/False <---What? Arent I applying for a cop type job?
And they go on from there! Did anyone's Doctor's telephone ring during the interview? This is also a common ploy. Also for those out there heading for non-chp cop/sheriff jobs , yes they do this same long test for them too.
I was just wondering, does moving on to take the oral psych mean that you passed the written psych test? Or are both psych tests (Oral and Written) scored at the same time after the oral psych is over. If anyone could answer this question it would be very much appreciated. I am currently in the hiring process.

Here is my question as I sit and wait for my psych results. If the worst happens I know I have the option of an appeal. Since an appeal can be pricey, is it better to just reenter the application process from the start and if so; how soon can I submit a new application after a psych DQ?
Good luck Alec, let us know how this goes for you.

Alec,
I found this on the other CHP board and thought you might find it helpful...
************************************************** ************************************************** ******
Hello,
I had posted this for another applicant on page 2 on this board but thought you may benefit for the information as well. I think that it would be worth it for you to get a second opinion and challange the original ruling, if you truely feel that they were incorrect and if you feel that you have information to disprove what was assessed orinally. Anyway this is just my opinion. The bottom line is, this is your life, your time, your expense, so it is totally up to you.
I have had some experience with this subject and would like to express my knowledge of what happened to me. First off, I believe that it is standard procedure to recieve a letter stating that you can get another Psych screening at your own expense or you can see another Psychologist appointed by the state. I am an out of state applicant and got my own Psychologist. One thing I agree with the other posts is make sure that if you seek your own Psychologist, that they are completely qualified to perform "Police Psychological Evaluations" and have done many in the past. That is something that the State Board Personnel is looking for. Once that is summited to the State Board Personnel, they will either accept it or reject it. If they reject it, which they did in my case, you can appeal it. They will set up a time for you to go to an appeal hearing that consists of 2 of the 5 Appeal Board Members, a Psychologist that represents the State Board Personnel, and A CHP representative. Everyone present sits down at a table and goes over all the concerns that the orignal Psycholgist presented in the document that disqualified you in the first place. They ask you questions concerning the report and give you the opportunity to explain your side of the story and give explaination to any concerns that they have. After it is over the 2 Appeal Board Panel memebers take the information that they gathered and go back up to Sacramento to present everything to the rest of the 3 panel members. Together they are the ones that will decide whether of not to grant your appeal. I do not know the percentages of applicants that have actually appealed and won, but just for the record, I did! I hope that this answers some of your questions. If you decide to go all the way with the appeal, just make sure that you read over the documents that they send you and be very familiar with it because it is what they refer to throughout the appeal. Have sound rationalizations for anything that they may have had a concern about. I would also advise that you make sure that if you chose your own Psychologist to perform the second evalutation, make sure that they give supporting evidence against anything that the orginal Psychologist had stated was the reason for disqualifying you. These are some of the pit falls that can cause you to lose the appeal.
Good Luck!
Autumn

Here is my brief story:
First psychologist disqualified me and I appealed his decision. The State sent me to a different psychologist that was far far away (overnight trip) and it was his opinion I was fit for the job (Duh!). Case closed? Negative, the State still disqualified me and I filed an appeal. A hearing was scheduled (another far away place) and approximately one week before the hearing I received a phone call from the SPB informing me I was a total nutcase, um just kidding, the person told me the State had reversed its decision, I was determined to be psychologically fit for the job, and the hearing was cancelled.
Moral of the story, if you believe "they" are wrong fight it, appeal it, and don't give up.
Thanks for the advice and kind words everyone.
I will update when I get new info.

I think whoever designed these psych exams ate too many crayons as a child. "Do you like flowers?"...wow, that tells us alot about somebody. Just another way for the government to make it look like it has it all figured out.

If this helps at all, I have been DQ'd by the PSYCH 4 (four) times, and was an explorer for CHP for 10 (ten) years and am now a paid, non-sworn employee for the department in a supervisory position.... One can only ask - WTF is wrong with SPB!?

Pscyh. test is a joke:
Case in point: I personally know someone that went to see psych. #1 for a job with a local bay area department. My friend was also in the testing process with another agency who sent him to see the same psych #1 for testing. He literally had both psychs in the same week from the same person but for different agencies.
He got a letter from department A saying he did not pass the first psych earlier in week. Department B sent him a letter saying he passed and he would be in the candidate pool for the next academy class.
He has been working now for several years with deparment B and has had no problems. We bring up his pysch testing once in awhile and have a good laugh.

All you've shown is that different agencies have different standards, which I think it to be expected. I don't think anyone will argue that a psychological profile is subjective, that's one reason applicants are entitled to more than one opinion (sometimes provided by the state without them knowing, sometimes in an appeal).

The MMPI was developed in such a way that the questions seem like they have absolutely nothing to do with psychology. This is because it was created using what is called criterion keying. What happens is that they give the apparently nonsensical list of questions to people who have been diagnosed with particular ailments, and if, time after time, those particular ailments yield the same answers to questions, said patterns of answers become an indicator of having those ailments. This method is actually the best supported way to construct personality tests. MMPI results help give psychologists a focus point with clients so as to make therapy or analysis more efficient.
Just in case anyone was curious.
Oh, and as mentioned before, any test is merely a sample of what it is supposed to measure, and that sample is not always reflective of your true characteristic(s). So never get discouraged if you don't pass a type of test. You can always better yourself or the conditions in which you take a test.
Hopefully the OP had good luck with his/her appeal.
