Does anyone know if the color vision and eye exam policy could be ratified to be less stricter? Perhaps, writing to a politician to see if the State Personnel Board (SPB) could lighten this portion of the exam, because it seems as though the CHP are weeding out a lot of great potential cadets.

There is a study that a percentage of males have a mild color deficiency...especially when it comes to the COLOR PLATES test or any color hue examination. However, in real life out on the field, these people could tell the difference between the colors as they appear on vehicles, traffic lights, etc...The study indicates that these percentage of males are NOT COLORBLIND because they can still distinguish colors. They only have a hard time distinguishing between similar shades of the same color (i.e. red, maroon, red-brown).

I just don't think that it is fair for the SPB to be so strick on these vision exams, especially for those who have a mild color deficiency.

Any thoughts?

I would imagine reporting that a reddish, maroon - possibly brown vehicle just sideswiped you could be a problem ;)
