View Full Version : CHP aviation article
For those interested in CHP aviation, Pilot Journal magazine has good article about it in the May/June 2006 issue.

A nice informative article.
When I first decided on the CHP this was what I wanted to do. I still do but I think I just want to get a taste of being a standard officer first.
I started working on my pilots license years ago in the Civil Air Patrol but the local CAP program went a bit down the drain so I stopped. It will certainly be something I pick up again when I become an Officer.

Sweet - I used to get that mag - I should renew it. That CHP panel makes the 172 panels I fly with look like an ultralight panel. LOL

Good find. The article was very informative. Sounds like they mostly fly up north. I didn't know you needed 2 years in before applying for the air unit.

They seemed to mean it in the more general term, ie "The state police of California."
Thanks for posting the article rich, good read!

That'd be awesome - off topic but not by much...
2 years ago I almost signed up to goto Silver State Helicoters in Sacramento - McClellan, CA 95652
About 50-60k - they teach you everything you need to know - get your liscenes, etc...

The wording in the article was a tad vague at times....FYI we have aircraft, both planes and copters, assigned to every division in the State

Good thing, because that's inevitably the case. Nobody just walks right into an Air Ops position.....Air Ops has a very low turnover, and the positions are very difficult to get into. I know two officers who have extensive fixed wing flight time, own their own aircraft, are both certified A&P (airframe & powerplant) mechanics, and one of them is a former military fighter pilot - both have been trying/waiting for several years to get into an Air Ops unit. You'll get more than a taste of being a "standard officer" - you'll get a full seven-course meal of it, complete with hors d'oeuvres and dessert!
