I hope I don't regret saying this, but thus far the process seems to be moving along somewhat fast. Assuming I pass the written my PAT, Psych Exam and QAP are all in the same week which is less than a month away. Now lets say I do well on the QAP, how long between the QAP and starting the background investigations? And on average, how long from the time you start things with your BI between getting accepted to the academy. I know there are a million and one variables but in "perfect" scenario, the process isn't quite as intimidating as I initially thought.
I was told at the written I should get my results in about 3 weeks. That only leaves me one week exactly to get a ride-aong in before the QAP because the local CHP office won't allow me to do a ride along until I pass.
I just hope and pray that things work out so I can make it into the academy around the time I turn 21

The time frames are all different. From QAP score to initial background was 4 months for me, but it the time to final background interview was pretty quick. Final BG and CVSA were on the same day for me, but I was traveling a distance off of the mountain so to speak and my BG wanted to save me a trip. My BG may have been so short because I have lived and worked in the same place for 10 years. I have done medical and I'm waiting to schedule psych now.
Of course it does not matter how fast things go, it will seem slow. They told me it would be around two weeks to get my QAP score and I was at the post office every day checking the mail starting the day after the interview.
As for a ride along; have you only called Visalia or did you try Fresno as well. When I called for a ride along at Fresno they were very helpful.
Are you getting anxious about the pending haircut yet?

How long ago did you have your QAP? I can't imagine there being a whole lot of background to check for me. I've had 4 jobs each lasting about 2 years, one was an internship which I did while working part time at another job. My current job was my first "full-time" job.
I've only called the Visalia office about the ride along, I will try Fresno as well.
As for the hair, I'm over the anxiety part, I just need to go cut it...

My QAP was in January.
"Perfect" scenario, backgrounds begin three weeks after your QAP. One job/one residence, background done in a month. Things rarely happen this quickly. You mentioned four jobs -- while that's not a lot, if even one employer is difficult to contact, things can slow down in a hurry.
More realistically, backgrounds begin 1-3 months after the QAP. Background takes 1-3 months as well. Then allow another month for the physical/psych.

One job was an internship at the Tulare County Office of Education, I did that while I working for a small bookstore chain in the area. Both of those were part-time. My last job was at a packing house which was also part time and then of course my current job which I have been at for a year and a half which is my first salary/full-time job.
I can't imagine any instance where there would be difficulty contacting one of my past employers and I also believe they all have policies that only allow them to give out the dates I worked at each job. I've moved once in the past 11 years and that was about 2 months ago.
So my situation, though not ideal, should be pretty easy to check on.
Even at 3 months for each step...that's not too bad.

Bingo^^^
My background began 2-3 weeks after my QAP and where done just over a week later(not the average).
Something that might help is to go back to your past employers and say hi. This places a face with your name in case the forgot and also you can tell them that they will be getting contacted from the CHP. I don't know if it helped me, but I don't see how it could hurt(unless they hated you then you might hope that they forgot you;) )

I'm testing out of Border Division...and from the looks of the office, they don't have many BIs so they're workin' extra hard. Anyhow, here is my timeline if you're interested:
PAT: 9/17
Psych Written: 9/18
QAP: 9/20
results received: 10/15
Bg packet turned in: 10/20
first contact by BI: 11/15
Initial interview: 4/17
CVSA: 4/20
Final interview: 5/26 (would've been earlier but I was out of town)
Psych oral: 6/20

Junbughunter, You may want to try Coalinga's Office for a ride along. It is fun! My husband and I both went on a ride along at the same time although with different officers. They are very flexible and it isn't very far from Visalia. ;)
