Four went to WEST LA - that's only one of several LA offices. I don't have the list in front of me, but I know at least a few other LA offices took trainees.

Mac would it be possible to scan and post the list? This summer I am planning to visit a bunch of CHP stations and see the areas that they patrol. The list of where the last officers went would help me figure out where I might stand a chance of getting in at. Thanks

i just deleted the list from my cell the other day, haha. something like 26 of 57 ctc iv-05'ers went to la. i have a smart husband who had a mid-range ssn and decided to play the ods and prioritize the la offices right off the bat. he ended up getting his first choice, which was where he would have picked out of all options, whether given first shot or 28th.

force, there are so many factors that i don't think there's any point in poring over the last assignment list. maybe if you checked out trends over the past five years, but who needs to do that anyway.

well, shoots... my husband had the phone list out this weekend, but i can't find it... he may have stuck it in his bag.

what surprised us from the offerings for his class was that there was nothing out of san diego. the class before sent some there and i assume the current seniors will go as well, but the only offices out of border that took cadets were westminster and santa ana. i was beyond excited when there were eight offers from border, but i never expected they'd all be from orange county. such is life! i'm starting to think that putting down roots in la might not be so bad after all...

When you mention a mid-level SSN, do you mean mid range such as 5000's or do you mean mid range relative to his classmates? I have a SSN near 6000 and I?m wondering if will be enough to get me to the bay area instead of LA.

hrm. i thought westminster was in border and there were three ctc iv-05 slots to santa ana... guess i DON'T know everything. ;)

mid-range meaning around 5000. he's actually a 6000er, too. he stayed out of a lot of the talk about placements and was mostly annoyed by it, haha. his advice to a family friend in ctc i-06 is to mess with people who ask what your social is or where you want to go. he got a kick out of saying things like, "oh, you're a 8000 and want to go to dublin? i want to go there, too, and i'm a 9000!" what a jerk, huh?

the openings really caught me off guard. it was totally something that had never occurred to me, not having any openings in san diego or el cajon. we're both originally from there, have all of our family there, and that's where i lived with our kids during the academy. we had a house picked out to buy and had already been pre-approved for the loan and it completely threw us off that there wasn't even a single opening there.

but, of course, we knew it was a possibility to go anywhere, so there we went!

Thank you for the reply. Our families think were crazy for wanting to sell our house now instead of when we find out were we are going. Were from the north end of the state and have always know that there is no way we will end up even close to here for years. This only helps prove that.

Right! And remember, it's just temporary..You can move around as much as you want after he's eligible to put in a transfer, provided the office and the terms of the transfer..The office we're going to next has a one year minimum..Which is fine with us, cuz it's our home town and where we're staying!

This is a little bit off-topic but what exactly does your SSN give you? You get priority the higher your number? Cause my last 4-digits are above 9900. Is that good or bad?

chp girlfriend
06-12-2006, 08:35 PM
From what I understand, they order the cadets by the last four digits of their SSN, greatest to least. Then, once they graduate they get to choose from the available position locations. So, 9900 is probably the best. You should get first pick. However, that doesn't mean you can work anywhere. As the other posts suggest, some areas require a minimum amount of experience before you can transfer there. So 9900 is GOOD!

Remember though, I'm not an officer...so this is just what I have heard. Hopefully someone else can validate my information.

New officer assignments have been discussed many times. The worst thing about the highway patrol is sometimes they send you where you don?t want to go. Everyone gets asked the question, ?Are you willing to work anywhere in the state?? and most of us answer in the affirmative, with tongue in cheek. Like Ive stated numerous times, unless you (or your spouse) are in the current senior class at Camp Snoopy, I would worry about many other things (AI, EVOC, PT), besides where the patrol will send you.

Anyhow, to answer your questions, within the last four or five years the trend has changed and the majority of new officers are going to the Bay Area. LA is still taking some, and this last class sent a larger portion than usual, but most go to the Bay Area, and a few are always scattered about in the desert offices. Where you are assigned out of the Academy, is determined by the last four of your social security number. The top number (9999) gets first choice and the lowest (0001) gets last. I think they should flip flop the highest and lowest every class, but Im not in charge. There are exceptions, if you own a home or are married with children, and live within an hour?s drive of an office offered, you will be given priority over others who want that office. They use Mapquest to determine if your house is an hour?s drive from the available office, and this isn?t really fair either since Mapquest is real inaccurate.

If you are planning on becoming a CHP officer, then plan on going to the Bay or LA area for your first assignment. Northern Division NEVER takes cadets, and usually the northern most office offered is in the North Bay area. The Central Valley is also pretty well locked up, especially if you?re from Bakersfield? right now it could take you five years to get to the Bakersfield office. Every so often Coalinga will take a cadet, but that?s about it for the Central Valley until you get your year on and can transfer.

Don?t let this discourage you, talk to almost any officer, and they will tell you about the fun times, and good memories they have from their first office. Most of us were sent away from home to kick our careers off. It doesn?t stop with new officers either, most of the time when you promote you move all over again.

I have no real preference on where I end up all though I do have a love, as I've stated in other threads, for cold/bad weather and cheap real estate. Part of the appeal and excitement behind joing the CHP is not knowing exactly where I could end up. Although, like most, enexpensive rent would be nice so I can afford that Corvette Z06...

I've spent time in just about any area of California and I've got love for all of it, wherever I end up I'll be happy!

This is so true. A close family friend of mine, who is an officer, said that the best times of his career came right out of the Academy. He was assigned to the LA area, an d worked graveyard for 10 years. He told me it would be in my best interest to ask for either a SF or LA office. He mentioned that those busy areas will allow me to learn more than any other place in the state.

You were at least half-right....Westminster *IS* in Border Division.

El Cajon taking new officers is pretty rare - San Diego takes them a little more often. Officers are getting transfers into San Diego with 2-3 years on, so the wait shouldn't be terribly long. If you see an office taking new officers with any kind of regularity, you can bet that transferring there won't be too hard.

corvette, ha! my poor husband is stuck with his absolutely base model little pickup. a fellow cadet drove a pretty sweet lexus and my husband asked, "how does a cadet drive a car like THAT?!" "buy it BEFORE the academy, son." ;)

i'm with you, roaddawg, on the mapquest thing. we know someone who was a homeowner with kids in school and ended up being something like 63 minutes away. they were in the bay area and ended up being sent to la while the rest of the family stayed up north. kinda stinky.

about the "higher pt scores give you preference" stuff. the truth behind those rumors is that academic and pt scores and the likes DO make a difference, just not in where you're assigned. the higher you rank in your class, the lower your badge number will be, of those allotted for the class. our beloved res-q, for example, is a real teacher's pet and ranked, i believe, fourth in his class? his badge number is thus far lower than my "hey, i passed, didn't i?" husband's badge number. but it's okay, i'm not bitter. apparently the academy sucked all competitiveness out of my husband's body... as well as about 3/4 of the life. ;) he only cared about getting a badge number lower than one person, his roommate. of course his roommate got one number lower. pride cometh before the fall.

06-13-2006, 08:13 AM
thanks, mac. contrary to what my husband might tell anyone, i was actually 100% correct, par for course. ;) his class did send three to santa ana.

after spending a weekend in san diego two weekends ago, i'm not sure i want to move back! we're from the sticks of san diego and i could hardly stand the heat the first week of june, never mind the dead of summer! hawai'i spoiled me... no tradewinds here! while we travelled frequently between hawai'i and the mainland, the summers were saved for family to visit US, so it's been a while since i've been here in the summer. i guess i'd forgotten how bad it can be. i much prefer how temperate it's been here in la and i wonder if i'll be able to make it back out to the heat. guess we can cross desert rat's post off the list, huh?

my husband plans on sticking around la for a while. he has some well ingrained feelings from his dad about transferring from your first station first chance you get, so we'll probably be here a couple of years at least. not having school-age kids makes it easier... we have two years before we have to worry too much about the specifics of where we're living. right now it's just drive-bys we have to think about...

Mac
06-13-2006, 08:17 AM
...the higher you rank in your class, the lower your badge number will be...
...which becomes EXTREMELY important when classmates start putting in transfers when that year of probation is up. An xxxx3 badge number will edge out xxxx4 if they're both in for the same office.

Well I think this thread pretty much told me what I already knew...focus on becoming a CHP not where I'm gonna end up. I'm fortunate that I am doing this while I am young and single, I have a lot of respect for the people that manage to do it who have families to depend on them.

As for the Corvette, it will probably never happen...but I like to think about it.

Hey, y'all thought I'd share some good news about placement. While it is true that you definitely may end up going somewhere you don't want to go, most people in my class probably got within their top three choices. There were only two who were decidedly unhappy with their offices. In fact, my roommates and I all got our first choice (23109 at Morongo and the other at Lone Pine). I had a mid-range social security number, no house, and no kids, but still ended up at the best-kept secret in the Highway Patrol--West Valley.

he's a good guy. my husband really hit it off with him and loved having him as a roommate. they had another roommate early on who quit, so it was just the two of them for a while. they got a new roommate who washed out at, gosh, week 23? he was assigned to ela and had already received his info from the new office. i digress. my husband's roommate is great. his wife and i hit it off and i'm excited for them to move into the area... he's commuting for a while.

Doing well. Lost 13 pounds since I left the academy, and I went from 11.5% to 7% body fat since my last PFT. My appetite has dissipated for some strange reason.

The FTO program is going well (I think). I'm learning quite a bit and got to break leather on Thursday. My biggest problem at the start was the empathy/guilt feelings of handing out some citations. I'm getting over that faster than I thought I would. My radio is getting better, but I have occasional problems following the conversations. I have a lot of room for improvement all over the place.

My mentee was locked on. He'll do fine. I had classmates with high-maintenance mentees, but I guess I was fortunate.

They are on week 20, my husband is in that class. I posted what cities were on the list on another thread (I didn't see this one until later) it's under General and "who gets priority with the list?" in case you are curious.

you know, i want to say it didn't even take THAT long... my first thought was that the list was turned in on a monday and you guys found out on friday? but maybe it WAS the next week... i know it was pretty quick turnaround, as my life was in limbo, just waiting for those orders, haha.

Okay thanks so either this week or next. Just counting down the days until Sept 8th but yeah ready to know if I need to get packing. Does anyone else have a spouse or otherwise who's in the I-06 class?

Hey, "look where you went" is a terrible thing to say about the best office in the Southern Division! If everyone knew how good it was, they would be clammoring for it. Say hello to the Crips for me.
i wondered if that would bring you out, haha! no disrespect intended, i just find it unimpressive to get your first pick when it's in la.

to be fair, we don't live where my husband works... we're several cities away. we just can't afford to live in the, uh, hills. ;) cost of living was a big factor for me when it came to his wish list.

but better here than there... we got a call yesterday as the a shift was ending, saying you guys were hovering around 120. yeouch! we were in la proper saturday and it hit 106, but it has yet to get near that at our house, though it's a bit more humid here, i think. i don't do heat well. does the chp have any offices in, say, alaska???

Ha, ha! 119 degrees is simply too hot to work in. To make matters worse, it was muggy and slightly drizzly. There's nothing like writing a tag with a sweaty, dripping hand. "Sign next to the drop of sweat, and don't tear my 215, please!"

No complaining about the heat !!

Can anyone shed some lite here?

inland doesn't take many cadets... normally you have to do your time somewhere else and then transfer, unless you are lucky.

G-Man is generally right, but there's always the possibility of going to Inland. Both of my roommates got Inland right out of the Academy, and they're loving it! However, if you work in Southern, you might get G-man as a beat partner and that's not a bad deal.

Chances are, just about every office is short of officers.

With many offices short, why do most of the graduates only get to choose major metro's like LA & SF, etc?

Maybe it's to make sure they get a little taste of everything in the field the big city has to offer?

Most people in the bigger cities want to get to the other offices; ie. own a home, cheaper, not as busy (sometimes), family, etc...that are not always in the Bay Area or LA. So when the volume transfers take place, Officers are on lists by senority to get to where they want to go. When and IF they get their choice of area, then another spot opens up generally speaking in the Bay or LA. This is then where new Officers get placed until it's their turn to try and transfer. Another reason is because of the high probability that the offices they are getting sent to are "Training Offices" with many FTO's and a training program in place to ensure a thorough and safe break in process. This is a cliffs notes version.....
