Anyone have any good advice on purchasing a new mattress? Old one is pretty beat and looking to get a new one. I really don't know too much about them and researching them online isn't getting me very far. If the more expensive ones are worth it I have the budget for it, but not looking to spend a lot without good reason. Any Tempurpedic owners? Sleep number owners? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Where in CA are you? If you're in SoCal, I'd recommend you check out Custom Comfort Mattress company. They are a family owned local business and make some great products.
I buy a super firm mattress and then use a foam mattress pad (from Costco) or something similar. AVOID pillow top mattresses. They wear out in a few years and you're stuck with half a mattress. Otherwise, you just replace the pad and you're good to go.
At first, I thought this an unusual question for Forums. However, over the years I've dealt with insomnia and have come to realize the importance of good sleep for peace officers. There is a whole 'nother topic on proper sleep conditions, but that's another thread. Good Luck!

I'm still steamed over our last purchase going on three years ago. We bought one of those pillow top things (Serta) --never do that again because you can't turn them. I wouldn't get anything with foam, or any kind of "memory," as they are hot. We hadn't had this set even a week when I noticed that when either my husband or I moved or turned, the whole mattress shook. Never seen that with a new set. I am convinced that this was not a completely new mattress. I get way better sleep in a hotel! They have the warrantees where one can try them out and return them if not satisfied --where do all those used ones go, I wonder? We didn't return it as we should have because we had such a long dragged-out experience with the salesperson. Over $1K down the drain! We will soon be shopping again for a plain old firm mattress set without all the bells and whistles. Looking things up on the computer is really confusing, isn't it? Each store gets to assign their own model names and numbers, making it impossible for one to compare prices when shopping. Good luck! You do need the best possible rest.

My next purchase I will be staying away from the "pillow top" style mattresses altogether. My wife and I purchased a Sealy Posturpedic from Costco several years back. The issue with the pillow top mattress is (as previously stated) you cannot flip them. You can rotate the mattress but it really does nothing for you. After a few years the pillow top offers no comfort. In my opinion- not worth the price they cost.
My wife and I are considering the "sleep number" but are still looking into other options as well before we make our selection.

Tempur-Pedic rules. I never slept as well as on a tempur-pedic. They really are the best hands down. They cost more but last about 20 years.

The lady and I have been sleeping on a first-generation Tempurpedic for about 12 years now. It's been great... not too hot, just supportive enough, very little discomfort when waking. After about 11 years, we both noticed we were stiff when waking up, and eventually noticed that we were sinking like crazy into the mattress, and it wasn't as supportive anymore. Well, it responds to body heat, right? So we just went to Target and blew $30 on a mattress pad for insulation, and it's back to being the nice supportive matress, and we're sleeping OK (if it weren't for the insomniac 18-month-old) with no sore back in the morning.
Nowadays they have way fancier and plushier models than the one model they made when I bought mine, so a bit of shopping/laying around might not hurt. If you're in an area with a Sleep Train, I know they go out of their way to make sure you're happy, and will let you return mattresses on their dime within 30 days. The only thing with the Tempurpedic, I've learned, is that they never go on sale. The prices are mandated by the manufacturer and stores can't monkey with the prices at all. And yes, you do need their fancy "foundation" even if you have a good box spring. It makes that much of a difference.
Happy hunting!

I have a fused spine and partially fused neck.
The only mattress I sleep on is the Nova memory foam one from Costco. I've had it for several years and it's still good as new.
The only downside I experienced is the odor of a chemical substance (heh gotta remember those wonderful court sayings) for a few days, but this appears to be normal.
I actually aired the thing out in the backyard for three days before popping it onto the bed frame.

Go to Overstock.com// I purchased a Queen sized "Bodipedic" which is a tempurpedic knock off, and quaility wise its identical, but it only cost me $330 with $2 shipping, and I received it in about 5 days. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!

The one and only choice in our house is the Sleep Number. It is an investment and probably one of the smartest ones we've made! Take some time, go to the Sleep Number store and see what you think....

+1... spent a grip just on the bed but sleep now-a-days is priceless. I'd spend it again in a heartbeat for a good quality bed.

I'll be putting together a place of my own for the first time starting next year, and that's good to know!

+1 on the sleep number. I have a fused vertibre and this bed is worth the money. You can't put a price on a good nights sleep.
Wow, I oughta put a patent on that phrase.

i have the tempurpedic cloud. it is the newer model and i have never slept so good in my life. it is awesome plus it has a twenty year warranty (and the warranty is not voided out by a stain). Knowing what I know now i would spend double the price for the mattress i like it that much. The only thing is we bought this expensive cover for it that keeps sweat from soaking in the mattress so if you do sweat it stays on the sheets longer as opposed to soaking in the mattress and drying. but i think it is gross to have a mattress for years and have it be saoking up sweat the whole time.

I don't post to often, but I have to put my two cents in and say Tempur-Pedic. I've had one for about 3 years now and it was a floor model so I got it for a deal. You never have to turn the mattress and I believe it has a factory ten year warranty? Rumor is that they can last to about 20 years. Well worth the money imo.

Don't spend your money on anything less than a Tempur-Pedic. Worth every penny. Find a place running a no tax free pillow deal and then sleep on it for a week. You'll understand.

exactly what I did. what could have been around 2800+ (bed, pillows, tax, extra stuff they threw in), ended up closer to 2300. I went with the queen sized cloud supreme.

Gotta put another vote in for Tempurpedic.
My hub (another Chippy) has had sciatica and severe back pain for years. Our old high end pillowtop wore out and he spent 2 days sleeping on the hardwood floor. On the third day, we stopped by the mattress store on the way in to work (we were graveyard partners at that point) and bought the tempurpedic.
I agree with Axjax, I'd willingly pay even more now that I know how much better it is.
I have since been pregnant and slept on it. If you know anything about pregnant ladies and how they toss and turn, you will know how much of an endorsement it is that this formerly pregnant lady slept pretty darn good on it.
We got the mattress cover, and I highly recommend it. With it being that foam stuff, I can see how it would get really gross once you sweat on it for a while.
(we were graveyard partners at that point)Awwwww....
Seriously, isn't that Tempurpedic stuff hot? I got a TP topper and couldn't stand it because of how hot it felt.
We ended up with the firm mattress and separate featherbed topper.

I've never felt mine was too hot. Can't speak for the cheaper stuff. We bought a $300 knock off for my 4-year-old, and he doesn't complain much :noidea:

You can get a temper-pedic for 1/2 the price if you go to a home & garden show and offer to buy the floor model. I wasn't prepared to pay $1500 right then for a king-size bed (originally $3000). You just have to pick it up after the show. Something to think about and I plan on doing that at the next show.
I have a pillow-top and HATE IT!!!

Like I posted in page 1.. I have a $330 knock-off (Bodipedic), and I've compared it to the name brand and noticed no difference. When I got it, there was no smell like some say there could be, and I've been on graves all summer and haven't had a problem with body heat. I've heard some complain about the heat issue, but nothing here. I seriously recommend saving about 2k and getting the "knock-off"... my .02

I am so glad you guys/gals posted this! I hadn't thought about getting a new mattress but lately my hips and back have been hurting when I get up and I have a 5 year old pillow top. It was great when we first got it but now not so good. I think I need a new mattress!

I'm not sure if they're located everywhere, but I would highly recommend European Sleepworks.
http://sleepworks.com/choosing/?gclid=CKLi8smiiqQCFQY-bAodt1_JHQ
Like some of the other posters, I had a similar problems with my pillow top. It would get lumpy and then we couldn't flip it. Then for our next bed, we had seriously considered the Tempurpedic, but then we decided we didn't like the idea of it sitting in a landfill at the end of it's life or the offgassing of the synthetic materials. Unfortunatley, that's the reality with these foam matresses, though I know many folks have 'em and love 'em.
The European Sleepworks beds are pricey ($1800+), but are made of natural latex, do not contain any toxins and have individually wrapped coils. It's most expensive bed I will ever buy, but it was totally worth it! They're super comfortable and customizeable. Each side can be tailor made (for couples with different preferences) plus instead of a box spring it has a euro style slat system that can be customized to give support where it's needed. This bed has seriously defined my relationship with comfort and sleep. It's one of the best purchases I've ever made!

Thank you for all the replies. I think we have decided on the Tempurpedic, possibly the Rhapsody. Some people from other states have said they did not have to pay tax on their Tempurpedic when they got a prescription from their Chiropractor. I can't find any information on if that is true in California, anyone know?

you'll have to visit/call a retail store(s) to find out. We didn't know about it till the sales guy informed us there's no tax and all these special incentives if we buy. the Doctor thing I've never heard of.

Nope. Of course, I am always cold. Hub is always hot, and he says our Tempurpedic isn't hot. He's been on graves all summer and we don't have AC but the bed still doesn't feel hot to him.

We use a memory foam topper on a standard innerspring mattress, can't complain. Does get a little warm in the summer when the house is warm... not too bad though. Will spend the bucks and get a tempurpedic when this one wears out.
You might want to avoid this store when researching...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uw8qHbDbJ14

Finally! Got the Aireloom all natural hand-tied set and can't wait for delivery! No foam, nylon --just good old cotton and none of that goop on the inside that our other set had (we didn't know about that!). Guaranteed for 20 years and now our credit card is still smoking. We are hoping that it is worth every dollar it cost.
