Hey guys,

A couple of weeks ago I posted some questions involving some of my grandfather's CHP gear I had come across. I recently was going through some boxes and I found a ton (hundreds!) of cartoons my Grandfather drew for the CHP (and some for the Navy--he was in the Naval Reserves). I thought I would post some here as someone here might enjoy seeing them. I apologize for the poor quality, I don't have a "high end" scanner.

My grandfather graduated from the Academy in 1965 (I include a picture of his graduation program, as well). He was a motorcycle cop until he was promoted from SGT to LT and ended up retiring in 1991. I don't know the inside story behind some of these cartoons, but there had to be one!

Thanks for your service!

Your grandfather pretty much drew the history of the CHP from the late 60's to the late 70's. Very nice. I didn't know him but I knew several members of his class.

I have a few online of the Navy ones, the rest are back up at home. The Navy ones begin in the 1950s. The earliest ones I found were a couple supporting integration of the military. Then there are a bunch re: submarines (since he started his navy career in the submarine service). Then there are a bunch from his Special Boat Unit XI days (the ones I have online are from this later period):

River Rat Two (http://hphotos-snc3.fbcdn.net/hs541.snc3/29653_708668630277_5601266_40082578_6908546_n.jpg)

When I get back to the SF area (where all of my stuff is), I will pull some more of the Navy ones.

What I find hilarious about those ones is how my grandfather's general views re: hippies comes through.

I will be digging through some more soon and will post the funny ones. If anyone is interested in prints/copies, message me and I will see what I can do.

I remember a bumper sticker from the "hippie days" when it was very common to put down Law Enforcement that said something along the lines of:

"If you don't like the police the next time you need help call a hippie"

Maybe your grandfather had one of them on his car (I did)

I know how precious those drawings are to you, but I would like to offer that you consider sharing them with generations to come by presenting them to the Academy museum for preservation and such. They are a small representation of the department, its image, issues and times during from the mid 60's through the late 80's. I am certain there are many who can relate to some of those images. I know that I can. Thank you for sharing them. Many memories were conjured in my aging mind that were comical and sad.

That's a great idea. I know there was a small display at the academy of some of his cartoons a couple of months ago (my grandmother and great uncle were up there and got a picture). As a result, they may already have copies out there, I will have to check.

The museum has 5 of the cartoons on display under the heading "Squad Room Art".
The museum does not have copies of the others. I really enjoyed those you posted though, thank you for showing them to us. Feel free to post 'em as you get 'em scanned.
