I am currently Chippie and my friend asked me this becuse he was interested in the department. I told him I would post on here because I was not sure. Any help would be great.

I have an excellent work history, no criminal background, and am currently a Reserve Deputy in Oregon right now. I did go through a point not too long ago where I was layed off from my job of almost 10 years and forced into unemployment causing some credit issues. I got sent to collections and my credit score suffered a little. I am now on my feet again and wanting to know if my chances with the CHP are obsolete. Any info would help, especially from a past or current background investigator.

Everything is evaluated in terms of recency and severity and if what you described is the only issue, I don't see any problem in backgrounds. The Department knows people are human and go through changes in life.

DW is correct. Every case is evaluated on it's merit. As a BI I would be taking a serious look at WHEN and WHY your friends finances went into the tank. If your friend has legitimate reasons for his/her recent finacial problems, then we would take those reasons into consideration during the investigation. However, if a person is irresponsible and can't manage their finances or other aspects of their personal life...why would you give them a gun, a badge and a black and white? Like I tell everyone, you never really know everything about a person until you've done their background!

I am a brand new member, and I can kind of read between the lines, but have to ask anyway.

I have a BK in my past due to divorce. Very short version.
During the divore, my ex and I decided that I would claim our children on my taxes, due to the fact that I had to pay 1,000 in child support.

Well, it has been over 10 years, and now she has changed her mind about our verbal agreement. There is nothing in writting. She let me know in February this year that she was going to claim the kids on her taxes, for last year! Instead of looking like a fraud and filing also, I took them off of my taxes, and really got hammered with penalties.

Long story short, I have since filed a Chapter 13, which repays all parties including the taxes. I did not have the funds necessary to pay the taxes, on a monthy basis, with interest and penalties. This chapter allows me to basically consolidate all collectors into one lump sum, and make one payment I can afford, and repays all parties in full in my case.

How can or will this affect me.

Case by case, tell the truth and let the BI work it out.
Sounds OK to me...

Will this affect your background, definitely. How will it? As retchp said, only your BI can say. As we've said before, what's the worst -- we tell you "no thanks"? Go ahead and apply.

Just to keep everyone that has been so helpful in the loop, I have passed the Written test, I have passed the PAT and taken the Psych. Written, and I have my QAP tomorrow. I will fill you all in on how that goes. Thanks for all of your comments and information.

I have taken my QAP, and I feel as if things went well. I will let you all know in a few weeks.

You should be able to get your QAP score within about a week. Nobody really needs to know your real name or where your from. Keep it anonymous. But then again, it's a little late for that isn't it? I'd recommend you change your sceen name in the future. Make sure you provide good documentaion for your BI when trying to address your past credit issues. If you can show good judgement and common sense you might be OK.

How does one get QAP results within a week or so? Dosent it usually take 2 -3 weeks?

Thanks,

Jeff, It usually takes a week to get it by mail. I took my QAP on a Thursday and I got my results by mail the following Thursday, exactly.

That is some great news! I hope I can see reslults in one week. They told us 2 - 3 weeks when we left the QAP. I will stay attentive to the mail box. Thanks for all of the info.

Also, thanks P.Head. I will do that. I never really thought of it like that.
