"For the first time ever, Ford will offer two vehicles for police use," said Mark Fields, Ford president of the Americas.
Gee, I guess nobody at Ford remembers that in their rich (if apparently underappreciated or researched) history they DID offer more than one police package vehicle at one time. In fact, they offered THREE at one time:
Crown Vic PI & Mustang SSP (1982-1989)
Crown Vic PI, Mustang SSP & Taurus PP (1990-1993)
Crown Vic PI & Taurus PP (1994-1995)
I think they also offered the Explorer and Expedition with special service packages during some of those periods too!
Time to hire some better speechwriters Mr. Fields.

"The Crown Vic's V-8 pumps out 210 horsepower."
Fail. :hitwall: The 2004+ CVPIs put out 250 horsepower at 5000rpm, and 297lb-ft of torque at 4000rpm.

Not only the Mustang and the Taurus, but didn't Ford also offer the Econoline fullsize van and the fullsize Bronco as well?
IMO though Ford should still offer something RWD as a police package. I like Fords but I still don't know if their FWD based police cars will do well and most importantly how they will hold up in service. So far FWD has not had a good track record-
-Dodge/Plymouth K-car FAIL -too feeble to be a police car.
-Chevrolet Celebrity FAIL - too weak, even with a V6.
-Ford Taurus (circa '90-'96) FAIL - the first true heavy duty FWD, but the transaxle was a nightmare plus numerous other issues involving FWD components.
-Chevrolet Lumina FAIL - not good enough, plus unfortunately it existed at the same time as the 9C1 Caprice.
-Dodge Interpid FAIL - the brakes caught on fire, one confirmed case was a park services car that was just doing normal, low speed patroling!
The only cars that have worked are the Chevrolet Impala, it makes sense for a major city (like the NYPD) and it seems to hold up. Also the Volvo that was used a decade ago seems like it made the grade.
Still Ford should offer this!

Time to hire some better speechwriters Mr. Fields. Don't forget the '84 and '85 model years. That's when Ford offered the SSP Mustang, the LTD, and the Crown Vic.
And Ford had 2 or more police package sedans at the same time through most of the '60s and '70s.
