Ok so a buddy of mine wants to put a police siren on his car and I informed him it was illegal as hell and he said that there was a law saying you could have it as long as you don't use it "in public" or as the car is "running". I informed him that florida had a law like that but not here in California. He puns to differ. Is he right or am I just missing something? How much trouble can he get if he were to get caught? Thank you guys for the help.

Juan....Dude... seriously.

Hahaha funny, but hey I'm just asking cus I'm not that familiar with the CVC. I'm not a chippy you know and I know it might all sound dumb but I just want to set this guy straight .

Huh.

I guess I only have three questions:

1. Why?

2. Seriously, WHY?

3. And regardless of his reasons, why would you bring added attention to yourself by asking questions like this for a friend?

Of course, in my experience, people this determined to make poor choices usually get themselves into trouble regardless of any attempts to keep them on the straight and narrow.

I'd highly recommend you stay out of his car if he does in fact do this, and he's probably not the best friend to have if law enforcement is a career field you're hoping to get into.

And I'll give you the benefit of the doubt here -- the VC section is 27002. Keep in mind that impersonation charges are a very serious matter, and a reasonable person (or 12 - hint hint) would probably be very receptive to considering the use of a siren by your friend to be impersonation -- ie, threat of arrest/detention after he sounds the siren.

27002 VC

No vehicle, except an authorized emergency vehicle, shall be equipped with, nor shall any person use upon a vehicle any siren except that an authorized emergency vehicle shall be equipped with a siren meeting requirements established by the department.

(1) Arrests, detains, or threatens to arrest or detain any person.

(b) Any person who falsely represents himself or herself to be a public officer, investigator, or inspector in any state department
and who, in that assumed character, does any of the following shall be punished by imprisonment in a county jail not exceeding one year, by a fine not exceeding two thousand five hundred dollars ($2,500),
or by both that fine and imprisonment, or by imprisonment in the state prison:
(1) Arrests, detains, or threatens to arrest or detain any person.
(2) Otherwise intimidates any person.
(3) Searches any person, building, or other property of any person.
(4) Obtains money, property, or other thing of value.

Good luck, be smart, and stay safe.

Wonder if that could be the reason that no car alarms sound like sireeens.

Thanks. I was leaning more to a VC violation not a PC lol. It's funny the things alex wrote. I know all that. And i take in consideration all that you said. And I'm not asking for attention of any sort I just simply wanted to know a VC number  but thank you for that warming message lol.

I'm not a Police Officer so I'm only saying this as a civilian and I'm sorry if it sounds offensive to your buddy....but, "Sometimes, you can't save the stupid". I'm joking a obviously. :tape:
I'm not calling your friend stupid, but trying to get the point across.

You did the right thing and told him it was illegal in this state; you did your part as a friend.
I strongly agree with "alexfarrington", you may want to stay away from his car.

He's responsible for himself, he may have to find out the hard way that it's illegal to do this.

Hey Juan, you still never told us why your friend wants to install a siren on his car.

He wants to put a siren on his car for "fun". Just to scare people or keep people from going fast or something like that all i heard was blah blah haha

I think the point is that a driver shouldn't be "scaring" other drivers just for the fun of it. That alone can have serious repercussions with which he may never be successful in dealing. Save the "blah, blah, blah" for the judge! Methinks that people tend to forget the other half of law enforcement, which is keeping order. Ever heard of law and order? It stands to reason that our world should never be allowed to become totally without order, then we have chaos at its worst, thus the reason for the vast amount of laws we have now. It's a whole lot easier to just "toe the line" in the first place. (Now climbing down from the soapbox.)

Yeah, that definitely seems to fall under the scope of 146... I seem to remember something about threats and intimidation being in there...

This has bad news written all over it. Don't know how old he is, but it seems like he has maturity issues, or, even worse, wannabe issues. This guy seems to be more liability than asset, and I'd pay close attention to that. Whether you're in the process or not, a trip to jail with this yahoo because of his shenanigans is probably gonna be a buzz kill for you. Keep those shenanigans cheeky and fun, Juan...

Huh?

This made my night

Every CHP Officer I know would give him a ticket at the very least. You can put a siren on a show car, but that car had better not be driven on the street unless it was a sanctioned event.

As others pointed out, I'd seriously reconsider hanging out with that guy. I don't know where I heard that particular expression, but when the proverbial cinder block falls onto the proverbial pile of poo, EVERYONE around it gets covered.

If this was a show car whose wheels would never touch a public highway or an off-street parking facility in its current configuration, that's one thing. A guy wanting to put a siren onto his own car just to cruise around and troll for contact is a recipe for jailtime.
