If I'm giving you a ride, you're getting searched. I'm not going to let you sit behind me without being searched first.

I've always wondered this. What is the CHP's policy on carrying passengers? By passengers, I mean anyone that is not a state employee, or an arrestee. I'm talking about taking somebody stranded to a gas station, giving your kid a ride to school, that sort of thing. I was wondering because most organizations are pretty strict on who they will and will not allow in a company vehicle. Just curious.

Thx

If it's in the peformance of our duty then we are allowed to give rides if need be. An example would be if a person were stranded roadside and had no help coming, we could drive them to a nearby gas station, no problem. We do this sort of thing all the time. Now rides to school or what not, not a good idea. It's a state vehicle and not our personal taxi. The department has no problem "helping stranded motorist" but may not look to kindly on giving free rides to the public, just because. Common sense stuff!

Here's a question along similar lines...are ride alongs strictly ONLY for applicants? My dad, brother, & a few cousins want a ride along when I'm an officer.

As long as they are over 18 and sign the release form, it should not be a problem.

I am sure it depends on the area. When i went through the process, the Sgt. would not let me go on a ride-along until I had my results from the written test and had passed.
